The speculation is that this was done to disrupt any immediate funeral in an attempt to reduce the number of protesters. In the Islamic culture mourning can go on for up to fourty days. There were people who were killed during protests which erupted during the day of Ashurah. It is unclear exactly how all the deaths occured but from some video footage seen around the internet show that some of the deaths were from gunshot wounds.

Another significant date to come is "Arba'een" which in Arabic translates to the word Fourty. Next year Arba'een takes place around February 5th. Arbaeen marks 40 days after the Ashura anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein by Yazid's armies in AD 680. Historically in Iran this date( 20th of Safar in the Islamic Calender) has been a day of political unrest. Protests have been common on this date in the past. Martyred protesters have been mourned during past demonstrations. Some people will make a pilgrimage to Karbala in Iraq but you can be sure many people will take to the streets of Tehran not only to mourn the martydom of Imam Husayn but to mourn for the loss of lives during the recent protests.

  • Many supporters ask where Mousavi is. At this point in time it is hard to give accurate information out as there are many versions of the truth. One thing for sure is that Mousavi's movements around Tehran are restricted to say the least. I've observed that the official statement that he released recently was dramatically shorter than previous ones. I know that one of his websites kalemeh.ir has had its content removed. His newspaper Kalameh Sabz (Green Word) has been shut down. The offices for this paper were raided and the staff were arrested recently. From now on it would be difficult to trust the content of Kalameh.ir. We know that they have cut his contact with the rest of his team. There have been no live interviews with Mousavi recently. Only a few statements occasionally.

Many others have vanished completely in the system. In recent days Iran has been openly targeting the UK and blaming them for the recent protests. Clearly the Iranian government are testing a new strategy. It seems like that are trying to create a sense of national unity by creating a common external enemy. Iran's political strategists are on a learning curve at Britain's expense. Currently they are engaged in an unhealthy game of tit for tat. First the protests blamed on UK, Iran expel two British diplomats, the UK return the gesture by expelling two Iranian Diplomats and now Iran has allegedly gone one step further and arrested two British Passport holders who I believe work as journalists.

Wednesday 24th June 2009

  • It seems in Iran change is on the way in one form or another. We see clearly in the last week or so the blatant partisanship of the Supreme Leader. This brings into question the role of a Supreme Leader whose role should be impartial. This now depends on your interpretation of the title "Supreme Leader". It seems the goal posts have moved many miles in the last week or so. A shockwave has cascaded through the political system of the Islamic Republic. The deadly military and police response to the daily protests has horrified not just the nation but the world. This bolsters the feeling that there has been significant change. The word transparency seems to have lost its place in Iran's political dictionary. The Iranian Constitution seem to have been rewritten without consensus. I refer in particular to Article 27 which states that "Public gatherings and marches may be freely held, provided arms are not carried and that they are not detrimental to the fundamental principles of Islam."

  • Many people have been beaten and injured at the protests across Tehran today. At Baharestan the police were waiting inside local mosques for the protesters to arrive. Baharestan is where the Iranian Parliament building is located. At this point many one would consider the actions of the Basij and Police as acts of Terror. This is amazing that even in the year 2009 such primitive policing still exists in Tehran which is a modern looking city in places.
  • Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said reaffirmed that there will not be any new election. In his speech addressed to lawmakers today Wednesday, Ayatollah Khamenei stressed the legitimacy of the recent election in which President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was supposedly re-elected.

  • Iran's former Revolutionary Guards chief Mohsen Rezaei withdrew his complaints filed with the Guardian Council about the disputed presidential election, the official IRNA news agency reported on Wednesday. At this stage with the various statements coming out of Iran it is hard to know what is really happening. Are certain people being coerced into making statements which fall in line with the Governments agenda?
  • It is rumored that Hashemi Rafsanjani who is the head of Iran’s Assembly of Experts and a former president has refused to put his signature on the recent statements issued by the legislative body, which has declared Ahmadinejad as the winner of the presidential election.

Since the original video footage of her death another video appeared showing her as merely an observer of the protests.

It is reported that he did not attend last Fridays prayers headed by the Supreme Leader Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Hoseyni Khamenei. By some this action would be seen as hints of a power struggle. • A UK based popular Furniture store has apparently been using Twitter to advertise their products by sending messages to groups associated with the Iran Election which if true is completely distasteful to say the least. The store in question is called Habitat. That meant that people searching for information about the deadly violence and mass protests in Tehran following the country's disputed election came up with posts advertising Habitat's goods. Many people have been killed and thousands injured in the recent clashes

  • Iran's Guardian Council has confirmed that they will not void the election results from June 12th.
The council's Spokesman Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei says "There has been no record of any major irregularity". This comment will anger many supporters of Mir-Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karoubi and Mohsen Rezaei.
  • Twitter which has been a popular tool for seeking news directly from Iran has become highly unreliable in recent days. I would suggest there are a few reasons. There has been a lot of fear amongst Iranians in Iran that somehow the Police and Basij will be able to identify them. So for them is the unconfirmed risk of reprisals even though most use anonymous identities. On top of this many sites are blocked. I know a few journalists were using twitter but many are now detained and with their communication mediums confiscated or destroyed.
  • A top election official in Iran says the box-by-box details of the vote will be released. This is normally considered confidential information. Obviously many people that voted for Mousavi consider the ballots themselves to be corrupted so why count fraudulent ballots. And remembering that they have admitted already that in up to 50 locations they received more ballots than they had eligible voters this exercise would seem pointless.

Today there are rumors that the Iranian Government want to rid Tehran of certain Embassies that were involved in this. Parsian Hospital East Sarv-e Avenue near Farhang Square may be accepting injured people anonymously today. The Canadian Embassy was not staffed over the weekend so they certainly were not accommodating anyone

  • There are more protests around Vali Asr. Gun shots have been heard. It is reported that Basij are trying to disperse more protesters. There are a few more YouTube videos today showing protesters dying.
  • All sorts of rumors flying around today but the root cause is mainly because there has been a major clamp down on journalists in Iran during the past week. The usual people emailing, sending SMS, calling, blogging from Iran are either in hiding or have been arrested or are suppressed in some way. The last wild rumor to fly around was that Khamenei had left Iran for which there were two alternate reasons. First reason was on medical grounds and second reason was because he had been ousted. Of course if I could verify these reports I would post them immediately.
  • There is a curfew in Isfahan enforced by the heavily policed streets.
  • Some Iranians are upset with "Nokia Siemens" for giving the Iranian Government the technology to monitor control and read private communications. The product allowing for this technology is called "Monitoring Centre" and was sold in the second half or 2008 to the Iranian Government before the Presidential Election. I would suggest the safest form of Telephony communication for the Iranian people would be VOIP ( Voice Over IP). An Internet Telephony system like skype might be useful. There are VOIP providers in Iran
  • State TV have started a propaganda campaign against the "West" claiming that the Protesters are Terrorists influenced by the West. Having experienced both sides of the coin I can assure you that the western governments are too busy to even contemplate the thought of meddling in Iranian affairs.

Some protesters have been trying to hand flowers to the Police and other opposing forces
  • Revolutionary guards are organizing the uniformed and plain clothed troops from Layleh Park and the Shiroudi Stadium. Extra resources have been called in from the surrounding towns to deal with the peaceful protesters. Layleh Park which is like Tehran's version of Central Park in NY or Hyde Park in London. The Shahid Shiroudi Stadium is named after Shahid Ali Akbar Shiroudi after a famous fighter pilot who died during the Iran - Iraq war. It seats at least 30,000 people

  • A power struggle is emerging. The arrest of Faezeh Hashemi yesterday, Rafsanjani's eldest daughter is being seen by many as a sign of a growing backstage struggle among the clerics who wield ultimate power in Iran, and a warning to Rafsanjani against aligning with the opposition
  • The girl in the video below is called Neda Agha Soltan. born 1982, she was a philosophy student. Neda's body has been given back to her family by the police under the condition that there is a quick and discrete / secret / low profile funeral. The Mosques in Tehran are under pressure not to accept the funeral proceedings for Neda. Already the original ceremony at Masjed Al-Reza Mosque located on Niloufar Square was cancelled. It was scheduled for 4.30pm today. The man with the striped shirt is her father.
